Connected Learning (CL): General Education Curriculum

The Connected Learning (CL) general education curriculum is a system of courses designed by BC faculty to ensure students learn skills and attitudes they may not otherwise acquire in their more focused major coursework. In CL courses, students learn and practice multiple authoritative approaches to making connections between knowledge, experiences, ideas, and solutions and sharing those connections effectively with a wide variety of audiences. Graduates who can learn in multiple different ways and apply diverse tactics to complex problems are more employable. Citizens who can help their communities grapple with multiple and conflicting approaches to community problems are more likely to make an impact. Individuals who know how they learn best are more likely to continue finding success in their endeavors and fulfillment in their curiosity.

Connected Learning Sequence (5 to 9 credits)
The CL Sequence teaches the purpose of BC’s core curriculum. Students learn concepts and attitudes for making and sharing connections, skills that improve their ability to think analytically, communicate effectively, navigate ambiguity, and author ideas that integrate existing and new information. The courses progressively develop connections practices that facilitate metacognitive learning, enable professional accomplishment, and increase the likelihood of personal fulfillment.

Foundations of Connected Learning (6 to 15 credits)
Foundations courses acculturate students into practices fundamental to making and sharing connections in academic settings.

Ways of Learning (22 credits)
Students take one course from each of seven academic approaches to exploring reality. Cumulatively, they acquire a range of interdisciplinary approaches to learning and practice discerning the kinds of questions to which each is best deployed. Faculty teach students to be deliberate, curious thinkers adept at making and sharing connections using a variety of processes.
