A survey of the beliefs and ideas that have shaped American culture from the colonial period to the present. Topics covered may include the rise of consumer culture, cultural attitudes toward the arts, the significance of race and gender in American culture, and the effect of American cultural and political attitudes on the landscape. While gaining knowledge of the United States' cultural past students will acquire an understanding of culture's role in the present state of the nation and the United States' international roles.
