Studies the experience of the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War, causes of the war, campaigns of 1862 and 1864, and the home front, including the burning, conscientious objectors, slavery, and shortages. Examines a variety of large trends, including race, gender, and religion. Trips to area battlefields, monuments and museums will be an integral part of the course and students will be required to integrate these experiential elements with the in-class lecture, discussions, and assignments.
