The goal of this class is to improve students' mastery and understanding of the Spanish language through the activity of translating texts from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish. In this class, students will: 1) Study theoretical and practical issues relating to the process of translation, 2) Analyze good and poor examples of translation, 3) Learn strategies for creating effective, communicative translations that faithfully convey the original message, 4) Practice translating complex, contextual, and cultural documents, and 5) Work with a local non-profit organization to offer translating services in order to understand the practical realities involved in translating for a specific audience.
