COMM-324: AI Literacy: Communication Technologies

This course introduces students to the historical, ethical, and societal impacts of electronic and digital communication technologies as a foundation to the study of artificial intelligence (AI). It then provides an exploration of the history, uses, and ethical dilemmas involving AI. Students will examine three critical stages of AI development: Expert Systems, Machine Learning, Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), as well as the concept of Superintelligence (ASI). The course will provide a survey of current AI technologies impacting communication fields, with an emphasis on journalism, public relations, marketing, mass media, and interpersonal communication. Students will also develop practical AI literacy for communication professionals, gaining hands-on experience with contemporary AI tools. Readings and texts will be available for free online, but students may be required to purchase 2-3 months of AI program access (estimated $20-30/month), depending on project requirements.
